The city of Guwahati is gearing up for a greener, cleaner New Year! Starting January 1, 2024, the streets will see a new fleet of 200 electric buses, adding a splash of green both in color and in spirit. This eco-friendly move, a project of the Guwahati Smart City Limited and the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), aims to replace the older diesel buses that contribute to air pollution.
The first batch of 100 buses, crafted by Tata and Olectra, is all set to roll out on New Year’s Day. These buses aren’t just good for the environment; they’re a big win for the city’s air quality too. The remaining 100 buses will gradually join the fleet throughout February.
Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, is excited to flag off these green machines, a true New Year’s gift to the people of Guwahati. But it’s not just about the buses. There’s a plan for charging stations too. One is already up and running at the ASTC workshop in Rupnagar, and more are planned across the city. This means these eco-friendly buses can be easily charged at various points, making them as convenient as they are clean.
In short, Guwahati is stepping into a cleaner, greener future, and these electric buses are leading the charge!
